Rovio has confirmed that everybody’s favourite bird-flinging game – Angry Birds – has raked-up half a billion downloads since its launch in 2009.

The company’s “Mighty Eagle”, Peter Vesterbacka confirmed the landmark figure at a press conference in Helsinki, which makes Angry Birds both the fastest-selling game, and most downloaded game, to date. Vesterbacka also announced that the company is to open the first Angry Birds shops in China over the coming 12 months.

Rovio has also put together a video – which you can view below – showing some other mind-boggling stats about how popular Angry Birds has become. For example, the app has built-up 200,000 years of total gameplay time so far, with 300 million minutes of play being added on a daily basis.

"This is a fantastic landmark achievement for us, and we’re extremely delighted to see such an incredible amount of people enjoying our games,” said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio. “We remain committed to creating more fun experiences and bringing exceptional quality to Angry Birds fans everywhere.”

Vesterbacka said the company’s next aim is to reach one billion fans globally, on devices including mobile phones and computers.
